Quick guide

From a long range video to a set of swing clips in a few taps.

Setting up the camera? See how to film your golf swing and the other golf swing video guides.

  1. Pick videos, or record one. Tap Choose from Photos, or tap Record a session to film your range session with the camera at its highest frame rate. Set the phone down the line, 10 to 15 feet behind the ball, so the camera looks through the ball and then at the target (the Tips button in the camera shows how). While you film the screen goes dark to save battery; tap it to see the camera for a few seconds. When you stop, the whole recording is saved to Photos and its swings are found. Long range videos are fine.
  2. Check your clip settings. While the app finds your swings (everything stays on your phone), set the clip length, Slowmo, album and name, then tap Review my clips. Your last choices are kept. A long video takes a minute or more: after the strikes are found, each clip's frames are checked for the golfer's swing (Checking each swing).
  3. Review the clips. When only one swing is found (and nothing in Uncertain), its full-screen editor opens by itself; tap Done to see the list. Otherwise use the tabs at the top:
    • Likely: swings in video order. Tap X to leave one out.
    • Uncertain: best guesses first, all crossed out. Tap the arrow to bring back any real swing.
    • On videos where the app can see the golfer, a clip only stays in Likely when the golfer's hands fall from a backswing to the strike around the sound; practice swings, walking and a neighbor's strike go to Uncertain. While Looking for more swings shows at the top of the screen, the app is re-checking spots where a louder sound hid a swing; any it confirms appear in Likely at their place in the video, selected, and the numbering of later clips moves along. Save All works at any time; a swing found after a save is unsaved, and the Saved screen offers Review N clips not saved yet to go back and save it.
    • Clips show as a two-column grid of pictures. Tap a thumbnail's play badge (bottom left) to watch the clip once, in slow motion if Slowmo is on. The save icon (top right) saves just that one; the expand icon (bottom right) opens the clip full screen, where all editing happens. A clip you have drawn on shows its lines, rings and tracer on its picture, with a small pencil badge.
    • How swings are found. By the sound of the strike and, in a video up to a minute long, also by the golfer's movement when the sound is not enough (the hands high at the top, a fast fall to the strike). This finds swings the sound missed, such as a muffled strike or two swings close together. A swing found only by the movement appears in Uncertain, unless the video has nothing else.
    • At the top of the list one folded row, Clip name, album and settings, shows the clip name, the album and the seconds before and after impact; tap it to open the clip name, Export to and Clip Settings together. It is folded again each time you open Review.
    • Full screen: the small switch above the transport buttons turns Slowmo on or off for just that clip; when it is on, drag the white handles on the timeline to choose the slow-motion section and pick a speed (Auto, ½, ¼, ⅛). Tap the Frame buttons to step one frame at a time (hold to repeat). Clip settings and Notes sit under the controls. Swipe left or right on the video to move to the next or previous clip that is still included; the arrows at the video's edges do the same. The X at the top, next to the star, crosses the clip out without leaving the player (the title is struck through; the arrow brings it back). The speaker button next to the Clips header turns preview sound on or off. The share icon next to the star sends the clip through the iOS share sheet. The first time you open a clip full screen, a short tour points out each button (Settings > Help > Show the player tour again replays it).
    • Type a clip name (numbers are added); to rename one clip, tap its name under its picture. Export to shows the album your clips will be saved to. By default each session gets its own album, named from your clip name and today's date (for example “Driver Range - 2026-10-12”; with no clip name, “Impact Reel - 2026-10-12”). Tap Change to pick a different album yourself; that turns off New album for each session in Settings.
    • Open Clip Settings for seconds before and after impact and for Slowmo: turn it on or off and choose how much of each clip around impact plays in slow motion. Speed defaults to Auto, which matches iPhone Slo-mo (⅛ speed for 240 fps video, ¼ for 120 fps). Include audio in slow motion clips is off by default (slowed sound is low and muddy). Slowmo looks best on videos recorded in slow motion at 120 fps or more, and starts off for low frame rate videos.
    • If a video was filmed sideways or upside down, Impact Reel turns it upright for you (tap Undo to change it back), or tap the rotate button. Swipe right or tap Back to choose a different video.
    • Tap the star on a clip to mark it as one of your best swings. Starred clips are also added to a “Best Swings” album in Photos when they are saved. Open a clip full screen and use Notes to write a training note.
    • A flame badge (“Best strike”) marks swings whose impact sound clearly stood out from your other swings in the same video. It is off by default: turn on Highlight standout strikes in Settings under Strike rating to see it, and optionally have standouts saved to Saved Swings automatically.
  4. Tap Save All Clips (the plain clips, with slow motion applied and no lines) or Save All Clips with Markup (it asks how to export the lines: Export all lines, Show in frame added, or Play 2x, which plays the clip clean and then again with the lines). Clips land in your Photos album for the session (or the album you chose). View Album shows them; Cut Another starts over. Your saved swings, stars and notes are in the Library (the books icon on the start screen); tap Saved Swings to see only your starred ones.

Markup tools

The full-screen clip screen has round buttons over the video. Top right: save (Preview, Export and the lines option), the Swing Sequence (a small grid of twelve frames, described below), + (the lines to add, and the opacity and width new lines start with) and, while a line is selected, line style (color, opacity, width, line ends). Top left: undo and redo. Bottom left: the clip menu (slow motion, then the clip's length) above the tracer menu. Bottom right: the sound button. All of it swaps sides for left-handed players (Dexterity in Settings > Markup).

  • Add: Add Line and Add Vertical Line, then the presets: Shaft start line and Head ring (placed from the clip's first frame when the shaft or head is found, otherwise as a default to drag), Shaft Line (pause on a frame, then tap it) and Foot line (drag it onto your feet). Each new line takes its own color. Drag a line's thin mark on the timeline to change the frame it starts on; drag a line or ring onto the trash to delete it; pinch to zoom the preview.
  • Shot tracer: Add Tracer in the tracer menu. Mark the ball under the red dot, then two frames just after impact (press Skip on a frame where the ball is hidden), then the apex and the landing. The tracer follows the frames you marked and then flies one smooth curve; drag the three speed bars while the clip plays, and choose whether the tracer stays, fades away or zooms in at landing. Adjust points nudges the apex or landing; Reset tracer points marks them again. The lines, rings and tracers are visual aids, not measurements.
  • Export: Preview export plays exactly what will be saved. Export saves the clip with the lines shown from the frame they were added, with every line from the start, without lines, or as a clean-then-lines replay. With lines, the saved clip is a new video named “… lines”; Keep original clip when exporting with markup (Settings > Markup) also saves the untouched original. A plain clip is exported lossless: cut straight from your original video with no re-encoding, so quality and resolution are untouched (a clip with slow motion or lines is rendered fresh at the highest quality).

Swing Sequence

Open a clip full screen and tap the Swing Sequence button (a small grid of twelve frames, just under save). The sheet shows twelve pictures of the swing in order, four across and three down, each in a 4:5 shape: P1 Address, P2 and P3 in the backswing, P4 Top, P5 and P6 in the downswing, Before impact, P7 Impact, After impact, P8 and P9 in the follow-through and P10 Finish. Before impact and After impact start halfway between the positions either side of them. Under the pictures is a slim strip with the logo. There is no text on the pictures. Tap a picture to select it and step it with the 1 and 10 frame buttons (hold to repeat); Reset puts it back. The expand button opens it full screen. Save 12 photos saves the pictures as separate photos; Save Swing Sequence saves one square image of all twelve. Both go into the same Photos album as your clips, and a button reads Saved until you move a picture. The pictures are plain video frames, without your lines or tracer.

Slow-motion videos

An iPhone Slo-mo video you pick from Photos is read in real time already. A Slo-mo video that was exported or shared (AirDrop, Messages, Save to Files) has its slowed part stretched in the file; Impact Reel recognizes that part by its sound when it lasts at least 20 seconds and analyzes it in real time, and Review shows a notice. If a part was not really slowed down, tap Analyze again at normal speed on the notice. Find slow-motion videos in Settings turns this off.

Missing swings? Settings > Sensitivity > High. In a video longer than 30 seconds the first 3 seconds are skipped, so start the first swing a few seconds in.
Too many false clips? Choose Low.
Best results: iPhone video filmed close to the golfer.
