How to add a shot tracer to golf video on iPhone

A shot tracer draws the ball's flight over your video, so you can see where it started, how high it went and which way it curved. Here is how to film a shot so the tracer works, and how to add one in Impact Reel.

Film it so the ball shows

Add the tracer, step by step

  1. Open the swing. Impact Reel cuts your range video into one clip per swing. Tap the expand icon on a clip to open it full screen.
  2. Open the tracer menu in the bottom corner of the screen and tap Add Tracer. Everything else over the video hides so only the tracer steps are left.
  3. Mark the ball at address. Drag the picture until the ball sits under the red dot, then tap Set.
  4. Mark it on two frames just after impact. The picture zooms in for you. If the ball is hidden behind the golfer on a frame, tap Skip.
  5. Set the apex. The clip loops through the flight; pause where the ball is highest and tap Set.
  6. Set the landing the same way.
  7. Choose the finish: the tracer stays, fades away, or zooms in on the landing.
  8. Tune the flight. Three bars set the pace: Speed to apex, Apex hang and Fall speed. Drag them while the clip plays. Adjust points nudges the apex or the landing.
  9. Save it. Tap save, then Preview export to watch exactly what will be saved, and Export. Or choose Play 2x to save one clip that plays clean and then again with the tracer and lines.

The tracer goes exactly through the frames you marked and then flies one smooth curve through the apex to the landing. It shows the flight you saw; it does not measure speed, height or distance.

Read what the tracer shows

The first part of the line shows where the ball started, and the bend shows which way it curved. Together they say a lot about the club face and path at impact: see club face to path.
